چکیده

The HARP (Heterodyne Array Receiver Programme) B-band camera will incorporate a focal-plane array of 16, 850 micron (325-375 GHz), SIS heterodyne detectors. This receiver has been commissioned for use on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. The complete instrument will o er greatly improved spectroscopic mapping speeds (>x10) of extended objects complementing existing continuum bolometer detectors and planned millimetre-wave aperture synthesis telescopes. We describe key features of the imaging module, and present some early modelling and experimental work. In particular, we describe the LO injection meander line, the constant slot-depth corrugated horns (including 15 GHz scale models), the radial-probe mixers, and various items of work relating to tolerance assessment and uniformity.

Quasi-optical submillimeter-wave SIS mixers with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions

We report on low-noise heterodyne mixing with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region for the first time. The receiver consists of the quasi-optical NbN SIS mixer with an integrated tuning circuit in which a radial short stub tuner is incorporated to resonate out the junction capacitance for RF matching and a balanced IF circuit for broadband IF matching. The prepared NbN ...

A 492 GHz quasiopticd SIS receiver for submillimeter astronomy

A 492 GHz quasioptical superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) heterodyne receiver for submillimeter astronomy has been constructed with a double-sideband noise temperature of 170+25 K, where the system response is an average over a 600 MHz i.f. bandwidth centered at 1.5 GHz. The excellent sensitivity is achieved through use of a planar twin-slot antenna feeding a pair of Nb-&OX-Nb juncti...

Heterodyne Instrumentation at the CSO

The Caltech Submillimeter observatory (CSO) is one of the World’s premier submillimeter telescopes. It consists of a 10.4 meter diameter Leighton radio dish situated in a compact dome near the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The telescope has been operating under a contract from the National Science Foundation on a regular basis since 1988. For the first time heterodyne Superconducting-Insulating-...

Low Noise 1 THz–1.4 THz Mixers Using Nb/Al-AlN/NbTiN SIS Junctions

We present the development of a low noise 1.2 THz and 1.4 THz SIS mixers for heterodyne spectrometry on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) and Herschel Space Observatory. This frequency range is above the limit for the commonly used Nb quasi particle SIS junctions, and a special type of hybrid Nb/AlN/NbTiN junctions has been developed for this project. We are using a q...

A 850 GHz Waveguide Receiver Employing a Niobium SIS Junction Fabricated on a 1μm Si3N4 Membrane

We report on a 850 GHz SIS heterodyne receiver employing a RF tuned niobium tunnel junction with a current density of 14kA/cm2, fabricated on a 1 μm Si3N4 supporting membrane. Since the mixer is designed to be operated well above the superconducting gap frequency of niobium (2 /h ≈ 690 GHz), special care has been taken to minimize niobium transmission line losses. Both Fourier Transform Spectro...
